Pre-Race Day 4 – Report

Today was excellent!!! Twig picking in the morning then out sailing for most of the middle of the day. Winds were supposed to come up to 25 knots in the afternoon so we practiced early. We got the heavy 4 up and sorted trim and hoist numbers. We then ran all the halyard lock tests successfully and moved to main halyard marking for the 3 reef points. By time we completed our tasks while dodging various ferries, police boats, Finn…

Pre-Race Day 3 – Report

Well today was about safety and halyards. We have many ways of getting sails up the mast and today was all about hoist height and release angles and offsets. The halyard locks on the main were replaced with a more reliable 2:1 system for now. EPIRB and PLB (personal locator beacons) were organized and tested. And today was the big boat series with Wild Oats, Beau Geste and the like competing within Sydney Harbour. The race was live streamed back…

Pre-Race Day 2

Well, today was interesting! OMG! Started at 8, finished near 9 with a nice curry dinner and home by 11pm. Much ass dragging going on by end of day. Brad must have been up the mast 10 times sorting halyard locks and such… and he has to go up each time we hoist and douse the main… Brave new world there. After much futzing and organizing of safety and related gear and a half dozen riggers and sorters dropping by…

Pre-Race Day 1 Report

Joe, Jay, Carla, Libby and I all arrived Sydney airport within 30 minutes of one another which is impressive when we took 3 different routes to get here. After checking in to our main house (very nice by the way) we headed down the hill to CYCA to check out the new Lindy. Brad and Tori and team had the boat in great shape and she looks ready to go. Note the carbon fibre liferaft case painted white for sun…

Middle Sea Race – Finish!

We crossed the finish line Wednesday morning after 8 to be met on the dock by the amazing support team of Lindy wives. Through the night we worked the boat mile after mile – very windy, wet and rough, but we were in a three way race for the Class win. One of the boats turned back for shelter briefly and as he owed us time on handicap, put us definitely in second, with a Russian boat vying for the…

Day 4 downwind

After nearly all upwind sailing so far, dawn brought us in sight of the Sicily shore. An amazing coastline to sail along – looks well worth a visit. As we turned the SW corner of Sicily up went the spinnakers. Broke one on a gybe so up went another. As the wind built in squalls we switched to a poles out jib and could head straight for our next island to round. Wind now up to the 30s and we’re…

Day 3 WAVES

WAVES! Big upwind day for Lindy. Rounded the volcano Stromboli in the middle of the night and then headed toward north shore of Sicily passing through small islands on the way. The strength of Swan yachts was evident as we fell off a 30 ft wave in free fall- no damage to the boat after that huge crash, interior looked like the remnants of a student party, and crew have bumps and bruises. Plenty of boats near us for the…

Day 1 Sicily

Great start! Off the line with the leaders as the gun boomed from the ramparts above. A pretty impressive harbour to set off from. A short spinnaker run outside the breakwater, then a turn to starboard and point to Sicily where we arrived in the late evening. Now struggling along in very light winds, but our efforts are being rewarded by passing other boats. Crew happy, full of stew, and for once warm.
